Department of Radiology announces recent promotions and appointments
The University of Wisconsin Department of Radiology celebrates 16 faculty promotions and appointments as well as the commitment and talent demonstrated by these faculty members.
Supported by the department’s professional development team, the following faculty members have successfully hit their career milestones and contribute to the world-renowned reputation of the Department of Radiology.
Though this group has successfully been promoted or appointed, the professional development team – led by Vice Chair of Faculty Development and Enrichment Jessica Robbins, MD and includes Professional Development Specialists Chelsea Hanewall and Colleen Pilsner, MS – will remain involved in their ongoing professional growth.
Faculty members can rely on the team for orientation, annual promotion oversight committee meetings, faculty development plans and inventory of academic activity. They also help to nominate faculty members for awards from external publications or professional organizations to recognize their achievements.
“We create a supportive partnership with faculty, so that they can continue being the superstar researchers, clinicians, and teachers that they are and get recognized for those things in terms of promotions and appointments,” Hanewall said.

Associate Professors
Kelly Capel, MD – Promoted to Clinical Associate Professor

A member of the Section of Neuroradiology, Kelly Capel, MD serves as the director of radiology fellowships and as associate program director of the Neuroradiology Fellowship program. Dr. Capel graduated from Rush Medical College in Chicago, completed a transitional year in internal medicine at Aurora St. Luke’s Medical Center in Milwaukee, and finished a diagnostic radiology residency and neuroradiology fellowship at the University of Wisconsin Hospitals and Clinics. She specializes in head and neck imaging, and her professional interests include spine interventions, vascular and flow imaging, and stroke imaging.
Jeffrey Swick, MD – Promoted to Clinical Associate Professor

Jeffrey Swick, MD is a member of the Division of Community Radiology with professional interests in musculoskeletal MRI, emergency and inpatient radiology, and anatomy. Dr. Swick earned his medical degree from the UW School of Medicine and Public Health before completing an internship at Wheaton Franciscan- St. Joseph Hospital. Dr. Swick returned to Wisconsin for his residency and musculoskeletal imaging fellowship, which he completed at UW Hospitals and Clinics.
John Symanski, MD – Promoted to Associate Professor (CHS)

John Symanski, MD is the Musculoskeletal Imaging and Intervention Fellowship associate program director and the director of musculoskeletal MRI. He graduated from Williams College and the Medical College of Wisconsin. He completed his radiology residency at Washington University of St. Louis – Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology and his musculoskeletal radiology fellowship at New York University. His professional interests include MRI, education, as well as shoulder and small parts imaging.
Giuseppe Toia, MD, MS – Promoted to Associate Professor (CHS)

Giuseppe Toia, MD is the chief of the Section of Abdominal Imaging and Intervention and modality chief of computed tomography (CT). He graduated from Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine and completed a transitional internship year at Resurrection Medical Center in Chicago. Dr. Toia completed his residency in diagnostic radiology and fellowship in abdominal imaging at the University of Washington in Seattle. Dr. Toia’s academic interests include radiology physics with a focus on CT workflow and optimization, deep learning applications in diagnostic radiology and intervention, and opportunistic imaging.
Professors
Venkata (Vinny) Meduri, MD – Promoted to Clinical Professor

Venkata (Vinny) Meduri, MD is a member of the Division of Community Radiology. Dr. Meduri is also the medical director at UPH-Meriter, the Division of Community Radiology’s MRI modality chief, and co-director of medical student education. He joined the division after completing a diagnostic radiology residency at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York and a diagnostic magnetic resonance fellowship at the UW Hospitals and Clinics.
Alexey Samsonov, PhD – Promoted to Professor (CHS)

A member of the Imaging Sciences and Clinical Imaging Physics Sections, Alexey Samsonov, PhD completed a degree in solid state physics at the Moscow Engineering Physics University. He earned a master of science degree in computational engineering and science and a doctor of philosophy in physics at the University of Utah. His research interests include quantitative MRI, accelerated medical imaging, image reconstruction and processing; numerical methods, scientific computing, imaging of myelination, and cartilage imaging.

Associate Professors
Mohammed (Parvez) Bhuiyan, PhD – Appointed to Associate Professor (CHS)

Mohammed (Parvez) Bhuiyan, PhD is a member of the Imaging Sciences Section and the director of the Radiopharmaceutical Production Facility. He holds a PhD in synthetic organic and peptide chemistry from the Kyushu Institute of Technology, Japan. Dr. Bhuiyan previously was an associate professor in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Rajshahi, Bangladesh and a postdoctoral researcher at Henry Ford Health System in Detroit. He then worked in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Utah State University and at the University of Chicago as associate director of the Cyclotron and Radiochemistry Facility.
Anu Brixey, MD – Appointed to Associate Professor (CHS)

Anu Brixey, MD is a member of the Section of Thoracic Imaging and completed her diagnostic radiology residency and cardiothoracic imaging fellowship at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) and was faculty in the cardiothoracic imaging section at OHSU and the Portland VA for six years, during which she served as chief of cardiac imaging and chief of ultrasound at the VA. Prior to her career in radiology, Dr. Brixey practiced as a pulmonary and critical care attending for four years. She graduated from the University of Chicago, Pritzker School of Medicine and completed an internal medicine residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital and a three-year pulmonary and critical care fellowship at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Her primary clinical interests are in interstitial lung disease, pulmonary embolism, trainee education, and lecturing/teaching.
Nicholas Burris, MD – Appointed to Associate Professor

A member of the Section of Cardiovascular Imaging, Nicholas Burris, MD joined the department after practicing at the University of Michigan with a dual appointment in the radiology and biomedical engineering departments. He is the David A. Bluemke Professor of Radiology and the director of aortic imaging. Dr. Burris earned his medical degree from University of Maryland before completing his diagnostic radiology residency, a T32 postdoctoral research fellowship, and a clinical fellowship in Cardiac & Pulmonary Imaging at University of California, San Francisco.
Dania Daye, MD, PhD – Appointed to Associate Professor (CHS)

Dania Daye, MD, PhD is a member of the Section of Interventional Radiology, serves as vice chair of practice transformation and is the inaugural director of the Center for High Value Imaging. She obtained her PhD in bioengineering as an HHMI-NIBIB Interfaces Scholar, a clinical research certificate in biostatistics and epidemiology, and her medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Daye completed her internship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital before finishing her radiology residency and her vascular and interventional radiology fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.
Stéphane Desouches, DO – Appointed to Associate Professor (CHS)

The chief of the Section of Emergency Radiology, Stéphane Desouches, DO earned his medical degree from Kansas City University of Medicine. Following medical school, he completed his internship and residency at the University of Missouri Kansas City School of Medicine and his fellowship in musculoskeletal imaging at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Prior to joining the University of Wisconsin, Dr. Desouches was an associate professor at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW). His professional interests include resident and fellow education, curriculum development, and trainee mentorship.
Jennifer Febbo, MD – Appointed to Associate Professor (CHS)

Jennifer Febbo, MD is a member of the Section of Thoracic Imaging with professional interests that include infectious disease, public health, lung cancer screening, deployment-related lung disease, and cardiovascular imaging. She earned her medical degree from Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and completed a transitional year internship at Tucson Hospitals Medical Education Program and a diagnostic radiology and nuclear medicine residency at Rush University Medical Center. She finished her training with a fellowship in cardiothoracic radiology at Massachusetts General Hospital.
Monique Mogensen, MD – Appointed to Associate Professor (CHS)

Monique Mogensen, MD is a member of the Neuroradiology Section and serves as the director of CT for neuroradiology. She earned her medical degree from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and completed her internship at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center in San Jose, California. She joined Stanford University School of Medicine for her residency in diagnostic radiology and a 2-year fellowship in neuroradiology. Prior to joining the department, she served as the fellowship program director for neuroradiology at the University of Washington. Her professional interests include CT applications in neuroradiology as well as education and training.
Professors
Christoph Lee, MD, MS, MBA – Appointed to Professor

Christoph Lee, MD, MS, MBA is a member of the Section of Breast Imaging and Intervention and the vice chair of research. Dr. Lee earned his medical degree cum laude from Yale University and completed his radiology residency at Stanford University. He completed both a breast imaging fellowship and a two-year health policy fellowship as a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Clinical Scholar at UCLA, where he earned his master’s degree in health services research. Dr. Lee also earned his master of business administration in healthcare management from Johns Hopkins University with election to the Beta Gamma Sigma honor society. He is currently the principal investigator of multiple R01 grants awarded by the National Institutes of Health (National Cancer Institute).
Veena Nair, PhD – Appointed to Professor (CHS)

Veena Nair, PhD is a member of both the Section of Clinical Imaging Physics and the Section of Imaging Sciences with expertise in cognitive neuroscience and a focus on multimodal structural and functional brain imaging across patient populations. Prior to becoming a faculty member, Dr. Nair worked in the department as a scientist for a decade. She earned her undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering from the College of Engineering in Pune, India, and her doctorate in experimental psychology from the University of South Carolina, Columbia where she also held a four-year graduate fellowship. She completed an initial postdoctoral fellowship in the department followed by a postdoctoral fellowship supported by the American Heart Association (Midwest Affiliate). She serves as principal investigator on NIH/NINDS-funded research and as co-investigator on additional NIH grants, with her work spanning stroke connectome MRI biomarkers, vascular contributions to cognitive impairment and dementia, and delirium and dementia.
Deepa Pai, MD, MHSA – Appointed to Clinical Professor

A member of the Section of Pediatric Radiology, Deepa Pai, MD, MHSA is interested in general pediatrics with a focus on pediatric musculoskeletal imaging and teaching. At the University of Michigan, she earned a master of health service administration and her medical degree in addition to completing her residency and pediatric and musculoskeletal radiology fellowships. She also worked as the chief of pediatric musculoskeletal imaging at the University of Michigan and at Children’s Minnesota before joining the department.
