Scott Reeder receives Gold Medal from ISMRM

On May 11, 2026, UW Department of Radiology Chair Scott Reeder, MD, PhD accepted the Gold Medal from the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (ISMRM) during the organization’s annual meeting in Cape Town, South Africa. The first recipient from UW–Madison, Dr. Reeder received the honor for his contributions to the development and clinical translation of advanced MR imaging technologies that are focused on some of the most important health challenges facing humanity.
Dr. Reeder has championed advancements in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), particularly through the UW Liver Imaging Research Program (LIRP) and his NIH-funded research applying MRI for improved detection and quantification of diseases affecting the abdomen. His interests include quantification of liver fat, liver iron overload and other features of diffuse liver disease, as well as quantitative strategies to quantify perfusion in liver tumors, hemodynamics of portal hypertension, and the use of new contrast agents in liver and biliary diseases.
Actively involved in national and international societies dedicated to imaging sciences, Dr. Reeder served as ISMRM president from 2022-2023. Bringing together the global community of 8,000 physicians, scientists, and engineers has always been a priority for Dr. Reeder as demonstrated by his role as program chair for the 2017 annual meeting and past service on the ISMRM Board of Trustees.
Dr. Reeder is also a former president of the Society of Advanced Body Imaging (SABI). He is a fellow with ISMRM, SABI, the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE), the Society of Abdominal Radiology (SAR), and the American College of Radiology (ACR).
