Anand Narayan discusses screening guidelines, ‘Gail’s Law’ in Fox 6 News segment

Anand Narayan, MD, PhD highlighted the importance of breast cancer screening and Wisconsin’s new “Gail’s Law” in an interview with Fox 6 News during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Newer guidelines recommend that screenings for breast cancer should start at age 40 to reflect the increase in breast cancer among women in this age group.
“There’s been a recent recognition that more and more women are getting diagnosed with breast cancer at earlier ages, and so, in part, some of the changes in terms of screening guidelines have reflected that,” Dr. Narayan said during the Oct. 8 interview, noting that women with increased risk for breast cancer could potentially start screening even earlier.
Dr. Narayan also discussed “Gail’s Law.” This newer mandate requires Wisconsin health plans provide no-cost coverage for both diagnostic and supplemental breast imaging, like MRIs and ultrasounds, for patients who are at increased risk for breast cancer or whose dense breast tissue can make cancers more difficult to detect on a standard mammogram.
Dr. Narayan said the change is a result of many years of hard work and collaboration.
“We’re so excited that women who are at higher risk for developing breast cancer, and then also women who have dense breast tissue, are now eligible for Wisconsin-based plans and Medicaid to get supplemental screening if they qualify for it,” Dr. Narayan said.
