Interventional Radiology Residency

Thank you for your interest in interventional radiology training at the University of Wisconsin. Our program has an early sub-specialization in interventional radiology designation and approved integrated and independent residency programs.

Integrated and Independent Position Details

We will be accepting applications for two integrated residency spots in the current interview cycle. Our independent residency will be recruited internally.

Application Information

The application process includes submission of a CV, medical school transcripts, and a one-page letter regarding motives for pursuing a career in interventional radiology. Candidates will undergo a formal interview process including interviews with the IR residency program director and at least two additional IR staff. Input from the diagnostic radiology residency program director and clinical competency committee will also be sought. Acceptance into the program will ultimately be based on the interview process and clinical/academic performance.

Criteria for Visiting Student Applications

The School of Medicine and Public Health (SMPH) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison reviews applications for visiting students meeting all of the following criteria:

  • The student is a U.S. citizen, Canadian citizen or permanent resident of the United States
  • The student is currently enrolled in an LCME or AOA accredited medical school
  • The student is in his/her final year of training at the time they will be rotating in the School of Medicine and Public Health
  • The student has received a passing score on USMLE Step 1

There are no exceptions to these criteria.

Additional Criteria for Interventional Radiology (IR) Visiting Students

  • Applications are only considered for students planning to apply to IR Residency at University of Wisconsin.
  • A letter of interest is required with the application.
  • Two and four week rotations are available.
  • Visiting rotations are typically scheduled July through October.
  • Visiting student applications are considered through the end of August but rotation availability is limited.

Research

The Interventional Radiology Section is actively involved in a variety of research interests. Current projects include:

  • Comparison of MR, DSA, and catheter directed CTA to evaluate morphology of vascular stenosis
  • Evaluation of CTA perfusion studies in measuring post-PTA vascularization
  • Evaluation of US parameters in assessing TIPS patency and function
  • Selective Internal Radiation Therapy – review of side effects, complications and early treatment response
