Cardiothoracic Imaging Fellowship

Our Cardiovascular Imaging and Thoracic Imaging sections jointly offer the Cardiothoracic Imaging Fellowship program to prepare the next generation of cardiothoracic leaders. Program flexibility enables fellows to focus solely on thoracic imaging or split focus between the two subspecialties.

In addition to being nationally recognized in their field, our faculty are regularly honored for their commitment to education. They provide comprehensive training in both inpatient and outpatient cardiothoracic imaging including thoracic oncology, diffuse lung disease, pulmonary vascular, cardiovascular, and peripheral vascular disease, airways disease, lung and heart transplantation, chest trauma, infectious diseases, critical care, and cardiac and thoracic surgery.

Fellows are responsible for supervised interpretation of thoracic and cardiovascular imaging exams by subspecialist faculty radiologists as well as several faculty cardiologists. In addition to supervised training, our fellows engage in independent weekend call coverage, an opportunity to further professional growth and ensure a smooth transition to independent practice, whether within an academic or private practice.

Cardiovascular and Thoracic Imaging Sections

As a Cardiothoracic fellow, you’ll be a key member of both the Cardiovascular Imaging and Thoracic Imaging sections.

Cardiovascular Imaging Section

The Cardiovascular Imaging section has long provided innovative, advanced clinical care in non-invasive cardiovascular imaging, including cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), magnetic resonance angiography (MRA), cardiac and coronary computed tomography (CCTA), and computed tomography angiography (CTA).

Our faculty are active and renowned locally, nationally, and internationally with over 550 peer-reviewed publications, 30 book chapters, 1200 scientific presentations, and 50 patents. Time-resolved contrast-enhanced MRA (TRICKs), pulmonary MRA for pulmonary embolism, non-contrast-enhanced MRA, four-dimensional (4D) flow MRI, low-dose CTA and CCTA, and 3D printing are just a few examples of the innovations developed by our group that have had a significant impact on clinical care locally and beyond.

Thoracic Imaging Section

From the Intensive Care Unit (Trauma and Life Support Center) to outpatient pulmonary medicine, Thoracic Imaging section is part of the clinical care team in helping to appropriately image and assist in treatment decisions for a host of cardiopulmonary diseases. Nationally recognized, our Thoracic Imaging radiologists are participating in the forefront of all cardiothoracic imaging modalities.

The section offers review of chest radiographs for the presence of occupational lung disease. Section Chief Jeffrey Kanne, MD has expertise in occupational and interstitial lung diseases with over 20 years of active NIOSH B reader certification and experience. This certification is mandatory for physicians who classify chest radiographs for certain federal surveillance such as the NIOSH Coal Workers’ X-ray Surveillance Program.

Research Opportunities

Zachary Clark Radiology Research Symposium

Held in spring, the annual symposium celebrates the high-caliber radiology research conducted by our fellows, residents, and medical students.

Our internationally renowned research programs are shining embodiments of discovery. Our department played a pivotal role in earning the Wisconsin Biohealth Tech Hub designation and is on the forefront of the transformative work it funds. Our research programs and labs are innovating in such areas as machine learning, ablation and molecular imaging. Our collaboration with industry means we’re helping to build tomorrow’s technology through efforts such as evaluating GE HealthCare’s photon counting CT scanner. Our resources provide support in statistics, IRB, grant administration and study coordination.

A key element of our research efforts is partnering with our clinical enterprise to accelerate translation of discoveries into widespread clinical practice.

From helping with the research to presenting it on the national stage, opportunities to engage in research abound for fellows!
