Faculty Spotlight: Sarah LaPierre
Sarah LaPierre, MD joined the Abdominal Imaging and Intervention Section as a clinical assistant professor in September 2026.
While at the University of Washington, Dr. LaPierre obtained her medical degree and completed an internship in general surgery. She completed a diagnostic radiology residency at the University of Connecticut, during which she served as chief resident. Dr. LaPierre initially joined the department for her fellowship in abdominal imaging and interventions.
Where are you from?
I grew up in “Big Sky Country” and remained in Montana through college and for the first portion of medical school training in Bozeman, Montana via the WWAMI program. I return to Montana for “working vacations” on my family’s cattle ranch.
Why did you choose radiology?
During medical school, I explored all specialties and realized quickly I enjoyed the diagnostic aspect of medicine more than the management portion. I was fortunate to gain exposure to the procedural side of radiology and found that the balance of clinically focused work with intermittent patient care, in addition to frequent consultations with clinical colleagues, was the perfect mix for me.
What are your professional interests?
I am particularly interested in pelvic MR imaging with an emphasis on female pelvic pathology. Additionally, I enjoy imaging-guided procedures and patient-centered care with an emphasis on appropriate use and quality improvement.
Why did you choose to work at UW–Madison?
Initially, I came to UW for my fellowship but quickly realized the collaborative and supportive group was absolutely integral to my satisfaction with work. In addition to the high complexity of cases managed at UW, the amount of procedures performed in the Abdominal Imaging and Intervention section allows me to directly participate in patient care on a regular basis. We also have really enjoyed the Madison area and look forward to exploring Wisconsin more.
What are your hobbies?
I enjoy spending time outdoors with my partner and dogs, including hiking and visiting dog parks. I am actively curating a personal library and also enjoy experimenting with new baked goods. My partner and I plan to travel internationally more in the future.
