Biography
Dr. Perry J. Pickhardt graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a bachelor’s of science degree in physics in 1991 and from the University of Michigan Medical School in 1995. From 1995 to 1999, he was a resident in diagnostic radiology at the Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology at Washington University in St. Louis. After residency training, Dr. Pickhardt served in the U.S. Navy, spending one year as the department head of radiology, U.S. Naval Hospital Guantanamo Bay, Cuba; and three years as the head of GI-GU Imaging at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, MD. Dr. Pickhardt joined the abdominal imaging and intervention section at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health in 2003 and was promoted to full professor in 2009. He continues to serve as the chief of gastrointestinal imaging and was previously medical director of cancer imaging. His work in abdominal imaging has resulted in over 500 scientific publications in the peer-reviewed literature, with an h-index >100 and i10-index >450. He has served as PI on multiple NIH R01 grants, authored over 100 book chapters and textbooks, and delivered over 500 invited talks. He has received seven best paper awards at the annual meeting for the SAR and was named “Most Influential Radiology Researcher” by auntminnie.com in 2016 and 2023. He received the SAR Gold Medal in 2024.

Perry Pickhardt, MD and John Garrett, PhD are among the finalists for the 2024 Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation (WARF) Innovation Awards for their work, “Innovative Screening Tool for Age-Related Diseases,” which aims to provide a “biological age” for a patient that may differ from their actual age and guide improvements in health.

Perry Pickhardt receives Gold Medal from Society of Abdominal Radiology
Perry Pickhardt, MD accepted a Gold Medal at the annual Society of Abdominal Radiology (SAR) meeting in April. The Gold Medal is the highest honor bestowed by SAR and is awarded for an individual’s outstanding contributions to abdominal radiology, medicine, and patient health.
