Faculty Spotlight: J. Erik Winterholler

J. Erik Winterholler, MD joined the Abdominal Imaging and Intervention Section as an assistant professor (CHS) in August 2026.
He obtained his medical degree from Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine and completed internship, residency, and fellowship in abdominal imaging and intervention at the University of Wisconsin.
Where are you from?
Sandy, Utah, though spent several formative years in Minneapolis as a child where I had my first exposure to Midwest winters.
Why did you choose radiology?
I didn’t initially! I matched first into integrated interventional radiology then changed residencies after spending two years learning diagnostic radiology. Diagnostic radiology allows me to extend my reach to many patients each day at critical times in their workup and treatment and interface with nearly every department of the hospital.
What are your professional interests?
Advocacy, policy, economics, informatics, medical device development, and education.
Why did you choose to work at UW–Madison?
To continue serving the great people of Wisconsin through excellence in abdominal imaging. There is a great espirit de corps in the abdominal imaging section which strives to be one of the very best in the country. I thrive in the collaborative environment with mentors and colleagues I also consider friends.
What are your hobbies?
Running, cycling, pottery, fingerstyle guitar, cooking, and traveling with my beautiful wife Kayla.
