Benjamin Prout, MD

Benjamin Prout, MD joined the Division of Community Radiology as a clinical assistant professor in October 2026.

Dr. Prout earned his medical degree from the University of North Dakota before joining UW Hospitals and Clinics for a general surgery internship, radiology residency, and fellowship in abdominal imaging and intervention. Prior to medical school, Dr. Prout worked as an engineer.

Where are you from?

Grand Forks, North Dakota.

Why did you choose radiology?

I was drawn to radiology because it is one of the few specialties that requires a comprehensive understanding of the entire human body. Before medical school, I studied chemical engineering, which taught me how to analyze complex, interconnected systems. Radiology allows me to apply that same problem-solving mindset to medicine. I genuinely enjoy being the ‘doctor’s doctor’ – collaborating with providers across all specialties to unravel challenging cases and ensure patients get the accurate diagnoses they need.

What are your professional interests?

Abdominal imaging, radiology workflow optimization, and process improvement.

Why did you choose to work at UW–Madison?

Having completed my training at UW–Madison, I experienced firsthand the radiology department’s dedication to diagnostic excellence and patient care. The opportunity to transition to faculty and continue working alongside such esteemed colleagues, while building on a strong foundation for career growth, made remaining at UW a natural choice.

What are your hobbies?

In my free time I enjoy listening to music, playing guitar, exercising, traveling, and cooking.
