The scan is designed to differentiate dilated renal collecting systems (calyces, pelves, or ureters) from obstructed collecting systems. The site and side of the questioned obstruction must be provided prior to scheduling the study. Without it the test cannot be performed. The test might also be invalid if there is impaired renal function on the affected side, or if there is vesicoureteric reflux.
