2017 Zachary Clark Research Symposium

Posted on Jun 6, 2017

On Saturday, May 13 the Department of Radiology held the first annual Zachary Clark Research Symposium. The symposium was held in honor of the late radiology resident Dr. Zachary J. Clark and included a presentation of the newly established Zachary Clark Radiology Resident Fund which will support and encourage scholarly activity performed by the UW School of Medicine and Public Health Radiology residents.

Oral presentations given at the symposium covered a range of topics in imaging. These were followed by a keynote presentation by Dr. David Bluemke. 33 poster exhibits were also on display before and after the presentations. Among the ten presenters were four Radiology residents and three Radiology fellows, most of whom had worked closely with Dr. Clark in the course of their studies. Zachary Clark was a contributing author on three of the oral presentations, and many of his colleagues spoke of both his intelligence and character. Drs. Elizabeth Burnside and Aaron Field moderated the oral presentations.

Dr. Bluemke, current Chair of Radiology at the National Institutes of Health and incoming professor of radiology at UW and editor of the journal Radiology, gave the keynote address, titled “Creativity, Coattails and Collaborations: Building Your Academic Career.” The presentation focused on how to stand out and be successful in the current world of radiology. He shared advice on the importance of mentorship and collaboration, choosing research topics that lead to meaningful contributions, tips for researchers trying to secure funding, as well as sharing ways he feels the medical industry will continue to change in the coming years.

Three awards were given out for presentations at the symposium. Second-year resident Dr. Edward Lawrence received the Best Oral Presentation Award for his presentation, "Opportunistic Screening for Hereditary Hemochromatosis with CT: Determination of an Optimal Unenhanced Liver Attenuation Threshold." The Best Educational Exhibit Award was given to fourth-year resident Dr. Brian Chan for his exhibit, "Hepatic Geography: Navigating the Islands and Continents of Diffuse Liver Disease." Neuroradiology fellow Dr. Jeffrey Cagley was awarded Best Electronic Exhibit for his exhibit detailing the 2016 WHO classification of tumors, "Alphabet Soup: Making sense of the New 2016 World Health Organization Central Nervous System Tumor Classification."
