University Hospital ranks among the finest academic medical centers in the United States. University Hospital has long been recognized as a national leader in many specialized fields of medicine, including radiology, cancer treatment, pediatrics, ophthalmology, surgical specialties and organ transplantation. The 493-bed hospital has more than 1,100 active medical staff who annually care for nearly 25,000 admissions a year, serving a patient population throughout Wisconsin and around the world. Its variety of primary care and specialty clinics handle over 800,000 outpatient visits yearly. University Hospital is a Level One Trauma Center for both adult and pediatric care, with a burn center verified by the American College of Surgeons. It has one of the nation’s largest transplant programs, performing more than 600 transplants per year. In addition, UW Flight For Life Helicopter Services at University Hospital are comprehensive and wide-ranging, and have served the region since 1985.
The Carbone Cancer Center, one of 41 comprehensive centers for cancer treatment and research recognized by the National Cancer Institute, offers innovative cancer treatment to patients throughout the Midwest. At any one time, the center manages more than 100 clinical trials, offering patients an opportunity to participate in studies of promising new therapies.
In addition, the American Family Children’s Hospital, located immediately adjacent and internally connected to University Hospital, provides a full range of services to meet the special healthcare needs of children and their families. Expert faculty and staff provide the most advanced inpatient, outpatient and home care, focusing on routing, preventive health care, as well as more specialized needs for infants through adolescents. The Children’s Hospital fields many subspecialties, ranging from allergy to sports medicine, cardiology, and organ transplants.
All of the healthcare partners associated with the University of Wisconsin make up a comprehensive system known as UW Health. The UW Department of Radiology has 82 full and part-time clinical faculty. In 2011, approximately 623,000 radiologic studies were performed at our hospital. The hospital offers the most cutting edge technology in all fields, as described in further detail separately on the links to the various sections of our department. The department features outstanding educational experiences for residents in all areas of radiology. Advanced imaging applications include a world-renowned Virtual Colonoscopy program, a robust muscuoskeletal ultrasound imaging experience, as well as numerous advances in MRI, such as MRA, MR Perfusion, and a new intra-operative MRI scanner.

William S. Middleton Veterans Administration Hospital
This 87-bed general medical and surgical hospital also attached to University Hospital, treats approximately 34,000 veterans annually, either as inpatients or outpatients. Residents at the VA participate in all types of imaging of VA patients.
Meriter is a private, non-profit 337-bed hospital, offers care in every major medical specialty and provides Obstetrical Ultrasound training for radiology residents, through the UW Department of Obstetrics.
