Dr. De Smet graduated from the University of Notre Dame after earning a National Merit Scholarship, Katherine Tuck Foundation Scholarship, Phi Beta Kappa, and the Merck Award for Outstanding Performance in Chemistry. He then matriculated at the University of Michigan Medical School earning the Dean’s Merit Scholarship, Mosby Scholarship Award for Scholastic Excellence, Alpha Omega Alpha, Merck and Lange Awards for Outstanding Achievement, and the Dean’s Award for Outstanding Five Graduating Students. Following his graduation, he was a diagnostic radiologist for the US Navy for two years at Portsmouth Naval Hospital where he was Head of Diagnostic Radiology. After leaving the Navy he joined the faculty at the University of Kansas School of Medicine as a musculoskeletal radiologist. During his seven years at Kansas, he earned the rank of a tenured professor of radiology.
Dr. De Smet then joined the University of Wisconsin Department of Radiology as tenured Professor and Division Head of Musculoskeletal Radiology, and held that post until 2004. During his tenure the Division expanded from two to seven radiologists, added a procedures section, and developed a musculoskeletal radiology fellowship program. In 1995 Musculoskeletal Radiology expanded to provide coverage for the 50,000 square foot facility integrating physical fitness, sports medicine and spine care at Research Park. Dr. De Smet became Research Park Radiology Director, a post he still holds today. During his distinguished career he has served as President of the Society of Skeletal Radiology, earned the Radiology Residents Award for Outstanding Teaching, the Editor’s reviewers recognition award with Distinction from Radiology, and was elected as a Fellow of the American College of Radiology.
In addition to his clinical duties Dr. De Smet currently serves on two national committees and three University and Departmental committees. He has given 145 national and international scientific presentations and was visiting professor 31 times. Dr. De Smet has written 1 book, 8 book chapters, and 161 research and review articles. His major research interest while at Wisconsin has been sports medicine MR imaging with an emphasis on the knee.
