Cross sectional imaging is the primary way modern neuroimaging is performed.

X-ray computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are the principle tools used to image the brain and spinal cord.

Cross sectional images are made up of "pixels" (picture elements). Each pixel represents a "voxel" (volume element) within the tissue being imaged.
