Cardiothoracic Imaging Fellowship

chest CTProgram Information

Program Director & Section Chief: Mark Schiebler, MD
Program Coordinator: Judy Imhoff

The Cardiothoracic Imaging Section offers a 12-month fellowship providing training and experience in the comprehensive diagnostic imaging of the chest, using radiography, computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging.  State-of-the-art imaging techniques, new research development, and their clinical application include CT angiography, virtual bronchoscopy, 2D- and 3D-CT imaging, CT and radiographic CAD software, volumetric analysis of lung nodules, cardiac CT, a dedicated cardiac MR scanner, digital radiography with dual energy subtraction capability, and computed radiography.  Interventional procedures, including lung biopsy, chest tube placement, and tumor ablation are also performed by the Section.  The goal of the fellowship is to provide complete training in all aspects of cardiothoracic imaging.  Cardiothoracic Radiology faculty include members with national and international recognition.

The cardiothoracic fellowship is supported by the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, the Department of Radiology, and UW Hospital and Clinics.  Fellows must be graduates of an ACGME or Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada accredited program in diagnostic radiology, and must have a Wisconsin medical license.  Fellows are appointed to the faculty as clinical instructors.  They receive faculty benefits including paid vacation, a book fund, and travel reimbursement.  Academic time is given to support research and other academic activities.

Program Highlights

  • The fellowship is structured to allow the fellow to participate in upper level procedures such as cardiac MR, cardiac CTA, and interventional lung procedures such as CT-guided lung biopsy, chest tube placement, and tumor ablation. Fellows also spend time reading chest radiographs and CT.
  • Fellows have the opportunity to train with highly qualified Section members who collectively hold a variety of teaching awards.
  • The practice encompasses the full scope of cardiothoracic imaging.
  • Fellows actively participate in departmental and interdepartmental teaching conferences.
  • Fellows are scheduled for academic time and are expected to work with faculty on at least one academic project during their fellowship.  Participation in national and international meetings is encouraged.
  • Training is provided on state-of-the-art equipment staffed with trained personnel.  The UW Department of Radiology has strategic alliances with equipment manufacturers for early testing of pre-release imaging equipment.  Software is continually upgraded to remain current.
