Abdominal Radiology

General Information

abdominal division photoThe division of Abdominal Radiology at the University of Wisconsin is a subspecialized group of 11 faculty physicians and 5 fellows who are dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the abdomen and pelvis using CT, ultrasound, MRI, plain radiographs, and fluoroscopy. Abdominal Radiology physicians provide expert consultation to referring physicians, and perform image-guided interventional procedures including abdominal/pelvic biopsy, fluid aspiration, tumor ablation, and intra-operative ultrasound. Each division physician also maintains an independent research program in some aspect of abdominal radiology. We are fortunate to have several federal and industrial grants supporting the research mission of the division and department. Teaching programs are also strongly supported by our division, and besides providing a core curriculum for medical students, residents, and fellows in abdominal radiology, the division includes the residency program director (Dr. David Kim) and associate program director (Dr. Louis Hinshaw).

Research

The division of Abdominal Radiology supports several internationally-recognized research programs. The tumor ablation program consists of both a pre-clinical laboratory for device discovery and development as well as an active clinical research program. The CT Colonography program has the greatest single-center case experience in the world. Other research interests of our faculty include a federally-supported advanced MRI program, and 3d CT reconstruction techniques, and a dedicated contast agent development laboratory directed by Dr. Jamey Weichert. The abdominal division employs three nurse-clinicians to support the VC, tumor ablation, and cancer imaging research and clinical programs. A strategic alliance with GE Medical provides the latest software and hardware advances for use by division members. Education

The division supports a core curriculum for medical students, residents, and abdominal radiology fellows. The medical student program consists of a lecture series covering major topics in abdominal radiology, and daily teaching at the computer console. Resident education is an important mission of the division, and includes a biennial lecture series that covers all aspects of abdominal radiology, daily teaching kelcz on the clinical services, case conferences, a weekly division teaching conference, and an extensive boards review conference series. In addition, both the residency program director and associate program director are abdominal radiology faculty. The abdominal radiology fellowship program currently has 5 fellows. Abdominal fellows are actively involved in all clinical and teaching aspects of the division, and are required to perform a research project during their year at Wisconsin.
